PROTESTERS against plans to erect giant wind turbines on Denshaw

Moor in the Pennines will be updated at a public meeting. They will hear an outline of the continuing campaign of the

Saddleworth Moors Action Group (SMAG) at its annual general meeting at 7.30pm on Wednesday November 22 at the Civic Hall, Uppermill. Geoffrey Sinclair, a widely respected environmental consultant, has

been appointed to lead SMAG's case at a public inquiry into the planning application by E.ON to erect the seven 360ft wind turbines. Mr Sinclair, who worked with SMAG in its fight against the planning

application earlier this year, has spoken on behalf of protesters at more than 50 public inquiries. He will explain to Wednesday's meeting the importance of a united

opposition at the inquiry and outline the next steps. In preparing for the battle ahead, SMAG is putting its activities

into a more formal structure. Officers and committee members are being appointed and a

constitution is being adopted at this its first annual meeting. All attending will be asked to register their membership of SMAG by

signing a declaration that they share the aims and ideals of the organisation. Only those who have registered will be entitled to vote. There will not be a membership fee.

SMAG chairman David Makin will give an overview of the work of the

group so far and how people can help in the campaign. He said: "There is strong support and people want to know about our

plans and how they can help. We need to raise funds to cover the considerable costs of preparing for and taking part in the public inquiry and we will be announcing details of fundraising activities at the AGM."
