A KIRKHEATON Scout and Guides group is appealing for funds after bad weather last month left them homeless.

The 44th Huddersfield Scouts and 119th Girl Guides, Brownies and Rainbows have had to rely on other venues for their meeting after the roof of their scout hut was wrecked by heavy rain and wind.

The group has held bring and buy sales, galas and dances to raise funds for the roof which had been damaged by vandalism.

But now group chairman Jean Beverley says the storms have caused £20,000 worth of damage to their base on Moorside Road.

The brick and tile hut opened 40 years ago. A perimeter fence was erected 15 years ago to stem repeated vandalism.

Mrs Beverley said: “There’s an eighth of the roof missing and water has been absolutely pouring in.

“We’ve had to take bins in to catch the water.

“It’s like a shell. It’s horrendous. The roof alone will cost £11,000 to repair and then to get the electricity back it will cost at least £20,000. It’s been vandalised before and this is a real body blow. It’s a nightmare.”
