POLICE are planning to get tough with vice girls in parts of Kirklees.
They are taking action in Batley, after numerous complaints from local residents.
And West Yorkshire Police are now urging people to come forward to report the problem.
The problem centres on the Mill Lane area of Batley Carr.
Extra police have been stepping up patrols in the area to curb the soliciting.
Clr Mary Harkin, (Lab, Batley East), said: “This has been a problem for some time in Batley Carr and when we hear about it we do report it to the police who come and move girls on if they see them.
“We did have a project to get the prostitutes off the street which tried to direct them to other occupations and help them with their health, but it’s still a problem and people need to keep reporting it.”
It is thought that up to 80 prostitutes work areas of Batley, Dewsbury and Mirfield, with more in Huddersfield.
A national website listing details of the sex workers was condemned by Labour deputy leader Harriet Harman.
And Clr Harkin said: “Websites like this really need to be regulated. You never know who’s going to look at a website, it could be a child, and what’s to stop someone putting a name on maliciously?
“Information technology is a good thing in the right hands but it can be abused.”
