THE combination of old master and bright new thing can be a heady mix.
The LBT saw jazz legend John Etheridge and homespun emerging talent Kit Holmes (pictured below) enthral with a diversity of guitar sounds that covered jazz (as expected) ethnic, folk and African roots.
Holmes kicked off with a stunning line in rhythmic song structures that had the audience entranced as she moved between a bewitching folk sound and the beguiling subtleties of her jazz styles.
Etheridge, ever the clever technician, showcased his stunning abilities by running the gamut of styles with jazz splashes and ethnic touches that opened musical avenues all along the way.
The pair combined for a finale of Dave Brubeck’s Take Five that was quite stunning in its cool charm.
And a bonus was the pre-gig workshop, courtesy of the kind staff at the LBT, gave a superb insight into how both guitarists went about their art.
Anyone seeing such an opportunity at the theatre in future should never turn it down – it’s priceless whatever the price!
