A GUNMAN who tried to shoot two policemen in Huddersfield was still on the loose today.

The man opened fire when armed officers searching the area after another shooting incident confronted him.

But before they even had chance to get out of their unmarked car in Clare Hill just after 7pm on Thursday, the man opened fire with a handgun.

The bullet smashed the window, showering the officers with fragments of glass.

The gunman then ran into a house and straight out through the back door before escaping.

Both officers were badly shocked and one suffered an eye injury from the glass.

They were treated at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary.

The attack came after a spate of shootings in the Sheepridge area last month - but police do not believe they are linked.

A police spokeswoman said today the hunt for Thursday's gunman was continuing.

She said: "Inquiries are progressing, but we would still appeal for information."

Thursday's drama started at the junction of Bradford Road and Alder Street in Hillhouse just after 6pm when shots were fired at parked cars there.

A man got into a dark Fiat car and drove off towards Huddersfield.

It is thought someone was in one of the cars being targeted, but had gone by the time police arrived.

Armed officers were drafted into the area to track the gunman down and they found the Fiat just before 7.10pm on Clare Hill.

A man was standing by the driver's door, but even before the officers got out, he opened fire on them.

The gunman then fled into a house on Clare Hill and out through the back door.

The man police are hunting is African-Caribbean, but no further description of him has been released.
