THE GUNMAN who shot two police officers was the son of a Huddersfield business boss, it emerged today.

University graduate Alexander Edward Lawton, 28, is believed to have shot himself in the head after opening fire at the Fleece Inn, Ripponden.

He died in Bradford Royal Infirmary at lunchtime yesterday.

Lawton, a former public schoolboy, went on the rampage as police tried to question him over the execution-style murder of Zubair Munir, of Thornton Lodge.

Police have confirmed that the bullets fired at the officers match the one which killed Zubair.

The 20-year-old's body was found dumped on moorland on Sunday.

Lawton - a former pupil of private Rishworth School, near Ripponden - lived at home with his parents, Michael and Susan, in a detached house in upmarket Almondbury, Close, Almondbury.

Well-established businessman Michael is the co-owner of Lawton Electrical, at Meltham Mills.

A spokesman for the company said: "The family are obviously devastated. It's been an absolute tragedy."
