“FERAL” youths are running rampant in Britain, according to a group that represents Yorkshire shopkeepers.

The Yorkshire Independent Grocers Association said the attack on Gurmail Singh illustrated the problem.

Chairman Andrew Wilby said: “It’s an absolute tragedy and our deepest condolences go to Mr Singh’s family.

“A very popular local retailer has been attacked in his own shop by feral youths who seem to be running rampant in this uncontrolled country.”

Mr Wilby criticised the Government and police for criminalising traders and failing to take action against thugs who target shops.

He said: “Many of our members are suffering daily attacks and verbal abuse and yet we are being asked to do the Government’s dirty work by policing sales of cigarettes and alcohol.

“Penalties for shops that sell to under-age customers are draconian, while the pilfering shoplifters get away with a slap on the wrist.

“In an incident like this, the full force of the law will be brought to bear against Mr Singh’s attackers, but there are so many incidents going unreported and unpunished.”

Mr Wilby said he wanted to see more police on the streets dealing with the day-to-day crimes against retailers .

“Under-age drinking and smoking are important, but the core issues of robbery and violence seem to be getting overlooked,” he said.

A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police said all complaints were given due attention.

He said: “Any incidents reported to the police are taken extremely seriously and each case is dealt with on its own merits.”
