MURDER squad detectives were last night continuing to question four men arrested on suspicion of killing Gurmail Singh.

The three 17-year-olds, two from Fartown and one from Bradley, and a 20-year-old from Crosland Moor were being held by West Yorkshire Police’s homicide and major enquiry team.

It was the fourth day in custody for one of the youths from Fartown and the Crosland Moor man.

The Bradley youth was arrested on Monday and the other 17-year-old from Fartown was picked up on Tuesday.

The inquiry into Mr Singh’s death entered its 12th day today.

He was bludgeoned to death at Cowcliffe Convenience Stores, at Cowcliffe Hill Road, on the night of Saturday February 20.

The 63-year-old grandfather was found in a pool of blood after being hit at least nine times with a weapon, probably a hammer.

The robbers who carried out the attack are thought to have escaped with little more than a handful of cigarettes, money and confectionery.

It happened two days after an alleged robbery at the shop.

A 17-year-old A-level student has been charged in connection with the first incident and will make his second appearance before Huddersfield magistrates on Tuesday.

St Hilda’s Church in Cowcliffe will hold a memorial service for Mr Singh this Sunday, March 7, to allow people to pay their respects. It starts at 3pm.

Meanwhile, a Facebook group set up in tribute to the popular shopkeeper continues to attract members.

Nearly 6,000 people have joined the group, called RIP Gurmail Singh, on the social networking website.

One said: “Sad waste of a lovely, gentle man, hope the net tightens up around the sad individuals who committed this devastating act of violence.”

Another message said: “It makes you feel physically sick that the people who did this are waking up every morning living with themselves after what they did. We will fight for justice.”

Another group called Justice for Gurmail Singh has nearly 1,000 members.

Police have set up a drop-in point in the car park of the Shepherd’s Arms in Cowcliffe and carried out an ‘information seek’ last Saturday, exactly a week after the incident.

Det Supt Dave Pervin, who is leading the inquiry, has praised the “tremendous” response of the public.

But he has continued to appeal for people to come forward with information.

Anyone with information for the inquiry should call 0845 6060606 or Crimestoppers, in confidence, on 0800 555 111, or text 07786 200805.
