SUPER speller Gursimran Kaur created a buzz in the 2010 annual Spelling Bee competition.

The 10-year-old Ashbrow Junior School pupil had the audience spellbound in the final at Huddersfield University.

Hundreds of children from year five, six and seven across Kirklees have been busy practising a 1,000 words from the official Spelling Bee Word List!

The ‘Bee’ is a joint initiative between The Parents of Black Children Association and Kirklees Learning Services aimed at enriching children’s literacy and vocabulary skills. Twenty spellers took part in the final testing their brains with words such as supercilious, parallelogram and camouflage.

Gursimran took the £100 first prize and Simran Mattu, 11, from Christchurch Woodhouse Junior, Infant and Nursery School was runner-up.
