A HUDDERSFIELD fashion designer won praise from clothes guru Zandra Rhodes in a top competition.

Student Kirinjit Samara, 22, of Cawthorne Avenue, Fartown, was highly commended at Mela 2003, the UK's largest Asian lifestyle exhibition.

She had to design an outfit that fused the traditional cultures and history of East and West for the contest at the Wembley Exhibition Halls in London.

Kirinjit, a student at Batley School of Art and Design, was one of 20 finalists.

She is a former pupil of Salendine Nook High School and Huddersfield New College and entered the contest after seeing an advertisement for it in a magazine.
