ADVERTISING watchdogs have condemned a "misleading" leaflet about the joining fee for a chain of gyms.

The front of the leaflet from Fitness First said the fee had been cut from £100 to £20.

But an asterisk next to the £20 led to a small footnote on the back - which said a £30 administration fee applied.

Fitness First - whose branches include one at Lockwood Park - denied it tried to hide the administration fee.

Company bosses said readers were likely to go through the whole leaflet, especially when an asterisk followed a claim.

The company said the extra charge was pointed out again to would-be members before they joined.

But the Advertising Standards Authority said the front of the leaflet implied that readers could join the gym for £20.

As there was an additional compulsory charge of £30, the watchdog decided the advert was "misleading".

The ASA told Fitness First to include such details in the headline price in future.
