THE Salvation Army is aiming to steer Mirfield's young people away from "The Dark Side" of Hallowe'en.

The town's SA corps is holding a ghost and ghoul-free Hallowe'en event for young people.

On October 31, the corps will welcome about 100 teenagers to its Huddersfield Road headquarters for a Hallowe'en party.

But there will be no trick or treating and dressing up at the event, which starts at 7.30pm.

Instead, youngsters will be looking at the supernatural from a Christian point of view.

Capt Glenn Furlong, of the Mirfield corps, said: "Youngsters can experience the supernatural - but through God instead of witches, wizards and `the dark side'."

Brian Rice, a stand-up comic and speaker for Christian organisations, will lead a discussion.

As part of the discussion, the youngsters will watch clips of horror films Halloween and The Sixth Sense. There will also be free food, music, dancing and games.

Capt Furlong said: "Church is an alien environment to young people now. We are trying to reach out in a relevant way to kids.

"Obviously our young church members will come, but it is open to everyone. It is not so much a church meeting as a youth event."
