Organisers of Saturday’s planned march and rally in support of Huddersfield’s A & E unit need help.

They want volunteers to help steward the march around the town centre on Saturday lunchtime.

Many thousands of people are expected to gather in St George’s Square for the rally, which is seen as a focal point for the massive campaign to prevent A & E services from being transferred from Huddersfield Royal Infirmary to Calderdale Royal Hospital.

Everything you need to know about the rally

The stewards will be on duty along the march route which takes in Northumberland Street, Lord Street, Kirkgate, New Street, Cloth Hall Street, Market Street and Railway Street.

Karl Deitch, one of the organisers of Saturday’s rally, said: “Ideally, we need people with previous experience of stewarding and/or people who are competent or just passionate about saving our A & E and want to help in anyway they can.

“We will require around 50 volunteers on the day.

“There will be a briefing at 10am on Saturday, just before the march, which will last around 30 minutes.

“We would ask volunteers to meet in the Square adjacent to the George Hotel, where they can meet with Mike Forster. They will be able to walk the route, and then you will be delegated to a junction.

“The volunteers will be free to do as they wish until 12.00pm, when the march will start, and will be on duty until approximately 1pm.”
