A public ‘ballot’ to gauge public opinion on a plan which could close Huddersfield’s A&E has been organised by campaigners.

Campaign group #HandsOffHRI will hold a series of ballots around Huddersfield, from June 23 to 25.

They are asking the public whether they approve of the Right Care Right Time Right Place plan.
You can also join in the ballot by taking part in our poll below.

Do you support plans to downgrade HRI and move A&E to Calderdale Royal Hospital?

Under the Right Care Right Time Right Place proposals, Huddersfield Royal Infirmary will lose its A&E department while emergency care will be centralised in Halifax.

There are other proposals in the project which would see the Royal Infirmary closed and a new, smaller hospital built on the Acre Mills site at Lindley.

Organiser Mike Forster says he hopes the ballot will draw attention to a public consultation on the proposal which ends on June 21.

Mike said: “We feel the consultation is flawed and this gives an opportunity for the people of Huddersfield to express their views.

“Most people haven’t seen the CCGs’ questionnaires and haven’t had time to respond.”

Mike added: “It’s a way of gathering evidence.

“It’s anecdotal but it will provide evidence of people’s and opinions and it will be submitted as part of the response to the consultation.”

The ballot is one of many events organised by #HandsOffHRI who have engaged a lawyer to look at possible legal challenges to the controversial plans.

Another #HandsOffHRI event takes place at Deighton Working Men’s Club, Deighton Road, on May 29 when there will be an afternoon and evening of Northern Soul and Motown.

The all-ages event, which will raise cash for the #HandsOffHRI legal challenge fund, includes DJs playing classic soul tunes plus kids’ karaoke and a bouncy castle.

Tickets (£5 adult) are available from the club: 01484 420426.
