Hundreds of University of Huddersfield students took part in an annual sports competion.

They were taking part in Varsity 2016, which saw Huddersfield teams do battle with their counterparts from Bradford University.

And over 1,000 students from the universities were united in support of the fight to save Huddersfield Royal Infirmary’s A & E services. They paraded #HandsOffHRI logos on kits, t-shirts and flags from both sides.

Bradford hosted the latest round of Varsity fixtures as 24 teams competed across 30 fixtures to determine 2016’s winning university.

The sports included athletics, American football, cycling, hockey, netball, rugby, swimming and even frisbee throwing.

Huddersfield spokesman Harry Granger said: “Despite the spirited competition and long history of rivalry between the establishments, students from both sides showed their ongoing support for the campaign to save HRI’s A&E – from the opening ceremony to the grand finale at Bradford Salem RC two days later.”

Bradford successfully reclaimed the coveted Varsity cup from last years’ winners with a total score of 16.5 points to Huddersfield’s 10.
