A WORKPLACE meeting led to 60 years of marriage for Patricia and Lewis Knight.

The couple, of Hall Street, Longwood, have just celebrated their diamond wedding.

They were married at Longwood Methodist Chapel on August 6, 1948.

They met while working at Ben Halls textile mill at Milnsbridge.

Mrs Knight, who was 16, was a winder and lived in Longwood. Mr Knight, who was 22, lived in Linthwaite and was working as a spinner.

He had gone to work there after serving with the Royal Army Service Corps in India, Singapore and Malaysia during the Second World War.

Mr Knight, now 82, stayed working in the textile industry until taking early retirement due to ill- health.

Mrs Knight, 77, left the mills to bring up the couple’s two sons.

She later went back to work, finishing by working in the canteen at Longwood Engineers.

The couple now have six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

They celebrated their anniversary with a series of family meals.

Mrs Knight said: “We’d like to say a big thank you to family and friends and neighbours for all the lovely cards and gifts we have received.”
