LEADERS of Huddersfield's Hindu and Sikh communities have been given Ambassadors for Peace awards.

Guru Datt Bali and Gurdev Singh Gossal were bestowed with the honour from the Universal Peace Foundation in Halifax.

Federation representative Teresa Quarmby, of Huddersfield, presented the awards for the men's work in promoting harmony and improving relations between communities.

Mr Bali and Mr Gossal join an illustrious line of Ambassadors for Peace, including Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and Bulgarian President Georgi Paranov.

Ambassadors for Peace are people who promote universal moral values, strong family life and inter-religious co-operation.

Mr Bali, from Fartown, said: "I have devoted my energy and mind to serving the community throughout my life without the hope of any reward. My work is my worship.

"If I have helped people and made a difference to their lives, that is the real reward for me. This award is not just for me, but for the whole community."

Mr Gossal, of Dalton, said: "I feel very privileged to have this honour.

"I have worked very hard in the community for many years and I am very grateful to the federation for recognising my commitment."

The federation is run by the worldwide Universal Alliance, a grouping of peace organisations.
