COLNE Valley High School staff and students were praised at its annual presentation evening.

Head teacher Linda Wright praised the achievements of the staff and pupils, who had succeeded in raising standards of attainment for the sixth consecutive year - the only Kirklees high school to do so.

In spite of disruption caused by renovation work, the school had maintained its high aspirations and could point to many sporting and creative successes, she added.

The evening followed an African theme, reflecting drama teacher Tim Padmore's experience of teaching in South Africa during the summer break.

There were readings from Nelson Mandela's Long Walk to Freedom and two pieces by the school's African drumming group.

The guest speaker was John Addison, from the Global Teachers project, which sponsored Mr Padmore's work in South Africa. He presented GCSE certificates to the Year 10 statistics group and to all Year 11.

Special awards were presented to Maya Mitchell, Sam Clay, Amy Hodgson, Dale Clay, Heather Crompton, Stefan Matwijiw, Dominic Abbott, Michael Fish, Stephanie Harding, Harriet Roberts, Amy-Lou Parland, Helen Curtis, James Welsh and Ross Housley.
