Woman is hurt in smash

A WOMAN has been badly injured in a crash at Kirkburton.

The two-car smash closed the road for most of this morning.

And police are investigating reports that the road surface could have been slippery before the accident.

They are looking into the possibility that spilled fuel may already have been on the carriageway.

A Ford Ka and a Vauxhall Corsa crashed head-on just below the Penistone Road junction with Thunderbridge Lane at 5.30am today.

The smash happened on a right hand bend.

The woman in the Ford Ka which was travelling towards Huddersfield is believed to have suffered two broken legs, head and internal injuries.

She is in her mid 50s and comes from Bird's Edge.

A doctor came across the crash scene moments later and stopped to help.

Paramedics stabilised the woman's condition before she was taken to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary.

The man driving the Corsa was slightly hurt.

Sgt Danny Groiser, of Huddersfield traffic police, said: "The cause of the collision is being investigated. We need to speak to anyone who had been travelling on that stretch of road overnight and experienced any problems with the road surface."

The road closure caused problems for people travelling to work.
