PLANS to improve GP services in Calderdale are to be discussed by councillors.

Calderdale Primary Care Trust wants to introduce additional GP services for 18,000 patients.

Its plans include creating 3,000 capacity GP services at Sowerby Bridge, Elland, Todmorden and Mixenden and creating a new 6,000 capacity service at Horne Street Health Centre in Halifax.

There would also be walk-in centres – with opening hours from 8am to 8pm seven days a week – at two sites within Calderdale.

The plans are to be discussed by Calderdale Council’s Health and Social Care Scrutiny Panel on June 4.

Calderdale has been identified as one of the 25% worst-served primary care trusts when it comes to accessible GP services.

Clr Bob Metcalfe, chairman of the panel, said: “There is a real need for additional GP services in Calderdale. I am very pleased to hear about this massive increase in provision proposed by the PCT.

“However, it is vital that consultation is carried out to the highest of standards to ensure the people have better choice, access and quality care once the additional service is introduced.

“It is our job as a panel to ensure the consultation plans are robust.”
