A HEALTH watchdog will meet for the last time on Monday in Huddersfield.

Huddersfield Community Health Council was instrumental in informing the public over the potential loss of the maternity unit at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary three years ago.

The body was due to close in September, but was given a three- month stay of execution by the Government.

Community Health Councils nationally will be axed on December 1, but Huddersfield's will close on November 27.

The last public meeting will start at 7pm at 12, New North Parade, Huddersfield.

Mrs Cherry Hunter, chief officer, said: "It will be a very sad day for everybody. The work the CHC has done since its inception in 1974 has been very valuable.

"We are almost as busy as we have ever been - even in our dying days."
