A HUDDERSFIELD health worker has retired after 38 years serving the community.

Maria Shah-Taylor, 55, of Lindley, came to Huddersfield from Malta in 1966.

She trained as a general nurse before specialising in mental health work in 1974.

Mrs Shah-Taylor worked as a community psychiatric nurse for the elderly at Storthes Hall Hospital, Kirkburton, when it was Huddersfield's main mental health institution.

She also managed the Mill Hill mental health day centre at Dalton.

Her final post was at St Luke's Hospital, Crosland Moor, as training leader for mental health. She was responsible for mental health training given to health workers in Huddersfield.

She worked for the South-West Yorkshire Mental Health Trust.

Training administration assistant Richard Sykes said Mrs Shah-Taylor would be missed. He added: "She was extremely popular at the hospital and has put in a lot of work over the years."
