TWO businesses have received new, updated healthy choice awards.

Bloomers Cafe in Batley has been given a gold award and Spenborough Swimming Pool at Cleckheaton a silver award.

The scheme has been put together by North Kirklees Primary Care Trust and Kirklees Council.

It rewards local organisations which aim to provide and maintain high standards of health and food safety for their customers and staff.

Louise Muhammad, the scheme co-ordinator, said: "It is really encouraging to find a largely fast food outlet, such as Spenborough Pool, and a sandwich cafe so committed to providing healthier options on their menus.

"It shows that any food business can achieve this award by working hard in making the small changes that matter."

The business are judged on three area: practising high standards of food hygiene, providing healthy options on the menu and encouraging a smoke-free environment.

From this month the award is open to childminders, playgroups and after-school clubs.
