THE Kirklees Pals scheme was one of the regional finalists in the NHS Health and Social Care Awards 2008.

The Pals, Practice Active Leisure Scheme, is a partnership between Kirklees Council and Kirklees Primary Care Trust.

It was among three projects shortlisted for one of the 12 awards announced at the Yorkshire and Humberside NHS regional ceremony in Sheffield.

And although the scheme, coordinated by Kirklees Culture and Leisure Services, did not win the “improving health and reducing Inequalities’’ award reaching the last three was itself an accolade.

Clr Liz Smaje, Kirklees Cabinet’s member for leisure services, said: “It was worthy recognition of the dedicated team of people in the scheme.”

More than 70 volunteers help physical activity development staff deliver the scheme.

Judith Hooper, director of public health for the trust and the council, said: “ Pals makes a difference to people with long-term conditions. For many it is life-changing.’’
