SHOPPERS in Huddersfield had the chance to stock up on information to help prevent them needlessly calling out ambulances and doctors this winter.

Up to a quarter of 999 calls to the ambulance service every year do not need an emergency response.

They come from people with minor injuries and ailments who could be better served by alternative treatment.

A roadshow at the Asda store in Bradford Road aimed to tell people about all options open to them.

Andrew Cratchley, director of operations for the West Yorkshire ambulance service, said: "If we want people to use our services appropriately we need to make sure they have the information and know-how.

"By talking to frontline staff in a relaxed and informal atmosphere, people can find out first-hand about NHS services locally, how we are working in partnership to improve patient care and how they can help us to deliver a fast, effective service."

The roadshow featured ambulance staff, representatives of the GP-led South Huddersfield Primary Care Trust and the telephone helpline NHS Direct.
