HUNDREDS of people faced disruption in Huddersfield –  because  of a hearing aid.

Dozens were evacuated from the  town’s main post office in Northumberland Street because of a suspicious package.

And many more  faced long diversions  in the teatime  rush-hour as police  closed the road.

It meant buses to and  from the town centre  were diverted, along  with hundreds of cars.

The drama began at  5.20pm when the parcel  was discovered in the  sorting office.

But an hour later,  police were able to lift  the barricades – after  tests showed it  contained nothing  more than a hearing  aid.

“It was a genuine  mistake,” said a West  Yorkshire Police  spokesman.

“When the package  was found there were  obvious concerns and  safety had to be the  prime consideration.  Thankfully, it was a  false alarm.”
