YOUNGSTERS at a Huddersfield school were left heartbroken after a burglary.

Thieves broke into sheds in the grounds of Kaye’s First and Nursery School in Clayton West and stole tools and equipment used by the school’s gardening club.

One young pupil, five-year-old Ben Sigsworth, was so upset at the thought of not being able to work on the gardens that he donated his own tools to the school.

Headteacher Mrs Lesley Butcher said: “The children were very upset to learn that thieves had broken into the sheds in their orchard.

“The thieves stole gardening equipment used mostly by the school’s Eco Club.

“It is particularly distressing as one of the sheds is brand new and was bought with a grant from Yorkshire Water as part of the company’s Challenge Project.”

Police believe thieves broke through fencing installed as part of the project and forced open the shed doors.

Mike Pearson, who chairs the school’s governing body and works for Yorkshire Water, said: “My colleagues and I were upset to hear that our hard work had been undone.

“The school has suffered regularly from petty theft and vandalism by people who have clearly little regard for the education of younger children in Clayton West.”

Police are investigating the burglary.
