An anguished dog-owner fears his pet may have been deliberately poisoned.

Seven-year-old Spud died hours after eating food dumped at a Huddersfield beauty spot.

And now Stephen Parr fears the food containing items dangerous to dogs may have been left deliberately off a path at Blackmoorfoot reservoir.

The items included pomegranates, grapes and onions and was partly covered with blue mould, which can be deadly to dogs.

Mr Parr has sent samples off to a toxicology expert but he and the vet who battled to save Spud believe she could have been poisoned.

Mr Parr, of Linthwaite, said: “The food was not in an area where people picnic and it seems very random that there were so many things there that are harmful to dogs.

“As far as I am concerned the person who left the food has murdered my dog.

“Spud was a much loved member of our family and will be greatly missed. We are absolutely heartbroken, and so are Spud’s mum and her daughter”.

Food dumped at Blackmoorfoot reservoir

Mr Parr walked Spud, a cross between a Jack Russell and a Tibetan Terrier, and his other dogs last Friday. He said he spotted her eating something and shouted at her to give up.

On Saturday she was sick a couple of times but then had to be rushed to Donaldson’s vets in Huddersfield after her legs went completely stiff.

“Within 20 minutes she was having blood tests and an anaesthetic to try and put her into an artificial coma. The tests didn’t show up anything but within hours she had died.

“The vet was brilliant and did all she could but was unable to save Spud.

“I put details of the incident on a Facebook page called Dog Walkers Safety to alert other pet-owners and have since heard about two other dogs which were taken ill after eating something left up near the reservoir.

“Yorkshire Water have been up there and have moved what was left of the food, but unfortunately some more had gone.

“It wasn’t just Spud that ate some of the food, a black Labrador had also had some, and was in the vets at the same time, but thankfully has recovered.

“Please be very vigilant with your pet, and keep a close eye on them, as there could be more poisonous food elsewhere”.

Dozens of people have responded to the appeal on Facebook.
