HUNDREDS of Huddersfield pensioners are eligible for large grants to help heat their homes over the winter.

Under a new means- tested system, elderly people are entitled to up to £2,500 for measures to keep them warm.

People receiving Government-funded Pension Credits, which have replaced the Minimum Income Guarantee, can apply.

The cash is aimed at people receiving an income or disability- related benefit who either own their home or rent it from a private landlord.

The money can be spent on loft and cavity insulation, draught proofing, a hot water tank jacket and additional heating.

Terry Booth, of Powergen Warm Front, which is managing the scheme, said: "We know that there will be hundreds of over-60s in the area receiving the new Pension Credit who would be eligible. We would urge them to apply for this free help."
