THOUSANDS of people partied in the sunshine yesterday at the Pink Picnic at Castle Hill.

The annual event celebrates Huddersfield’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) communities.

More than 4,500 people enjoyed entertainment by Out of the Gray, Soraya Vivian, Secret’s Out and Pride Sisters. DJs from The New Union off New Street and Nefertiti’s on John William Street also performed until 8pm.

Huddersfield police officer and former Mr Gay UK Mark Carter officially opened the event at Lumb Lane at 1.30pm.

Stephen Bond, who chairs the Pink Picnic Committee and helps organise the event, was pleased with the day. He said: “It was absolutely wonderful and we couldn’t have wished for better weather.”

Stephen added: “We had a children’s fun fair this year for the first time and we’re hoping to expand it next year. The Pink Picnic is very much an LGBT event for everyone.”

Ross Smith, who came with friends from Liverpool, agreed.

He said: “This is the first time we’ve been to the Pink Picnic in 20 years. It’s fantastic that everyone comes together here.

“There are other gay festivals which are all about boozing but the Pink Picnic is family friendly and you have gay and straight people here.

“It’s a unique event. There’s nothing else in the country like it.”
