THEY spend most of their time fixing buses but now they are getting on their bikes for charity.

Five bus engineers will be pedalling from Manchester to Blackpool and back to raise more than a thousand pounds for the Mirfield-based Hollybank Trust.

Team Arriva includes workshop manager Derek Gibson, engineers Kevin Pyne, Kevin Briscoe and Andrew Noble from the Heckmondwike depot along with Phil Kilgariff from the Dewsbury depot.

Their challenge will see them setting off at 4am on July 14.

All proceeds will go to support Hollybank Trust in Mirfield, which cares for and educates children and adults with profound and multiple disabilities.

Kevin Pyne said: “We are all keen cyclists who got interested in cycling with the Cycle to Work scheme at Arriva. Once you start, you get hooked on it!

“We were going to do it one way then realised we had to come back, so we will do it all in the same day. It’s going to be a long day but it’s not a race so if it takes 10 hours then that’s fine.

“We’ve been training most days on our bikes then going out for longer rides of up to 70 miles at the weekend.”
