A COUPLE have been given suspended jail sentences for bringing a child illegally into the UK.

Asad Hussain and Salma Shabir, of Heckmondwike, pretended the child was their own daughter to give her a better life.

But they admitted at Leeds Crown Court they had used false documents to get the girl, then aged two, into the country.

Hussain, 21, was given a 51-week sentence, suspended for two years, while his 22-year-old wife was given a six-month sentence, suspended for two years.

The court heard the girl had been living with the couple while they were staying in Pakistan and they had wanted to get her a better life.
