A MAN hanged himself after drinking the equivalent of ten pints of beer.

Mathew Pearson, 25, was found hanging from the loft of his family’s home on Cawley Lane, Heckmondwike, on November 13, 2009.

He had previously sent text messages which the Deputy Coroner, Paul Marks, said showed an intent to take his own life.

At an inquest into his death at Huddersfield Coroner’s Court yesterday, the court heard that Mr Pearson was living at his family home after problems with his girlfriend.

He was last seen by his sister’s boyfriend Ashley Lumb at 10.30am.

In a statement, Mr Lumb said: “I left the house and shouted ‘see you later’ and he shouted ‘see you later’ back.

“I got back home at about 4.10pm... opened the door and Mathew was hanging out of the loft in the hall.

“There was some sort of rope and a chair underneath him.”

Mr Lumb attempted to push him up into the loft to release the pressure on his neck and then called an ambulance and he was talked through CPR. Paramedics took Mr Pearson to hospital but he had died.

Reports showed Mr Pearson had consumed the equivalent of ten pints of beer or 18 single measures of a spirit.

Deputy Coroner Paul Marks told the inquest that he had seen text messages sent from Mr Pearson’s phone which “clearly show evidence of intent in this sad case”.

Recording a verdict that Mr Pearson killed himself, he added: “This was not an accident and I think Mathew intended to take his own life.

“I don’t think we will ever have the answers as to why.”
