HECKMONDWIKE will undergo the first stage of a major regeneration this month.
The scheme begins with the demolition of the George Public House and adjacent building.
Kirklees Council plan to regenerate the area with a new Library and Information Centre in the heart of the town. These will provide free internet access, a wide range of books, and access to services such as housing, council tax and benefit inquiries.
Other improvements will include wider pavements and crossings to improve road safety, and a new feature archway on Blanket Hall Street is planned.
There is also the possibility of a new health centre and bus facilities.
Councillor Robert Light, leader of Kirklees Council, said: “These are exciting times for Heckmondwike with major improvements on the way for the people living and working in the area, as well as visitors to the town.”
