FAMILIES of disabled Huddersfield children are being urged to join forces to campaign for their rights.

The Contact a Family charity is organising a free parent workshop this month to teach families how to get what they need.

The session will be held at Sheffield’s Norfolk Heritage Park on November 15.

It will offer families the chance to share their experiences on common issues, including education, respite care and benefits.

The event is being run as part of the Every Disabled Child Matters campaign, which was set up by four leading organisations to fight for the rights of disabled children.

Campaign manager Steve Broach said: “The Government has taken positive steps to make disabled children a priority, investing an additional £340m in services.

“The campaign hopes to ensure the encouraging signs are also seen at a local level.

“Research shows that many families with disabled children are fed up having to fight for basic support and want to feel included in their community.’’
