PUT a smile on a the face of needy child this Christmas by donating toys to the Salvation Army.

Gifts will go to local youngsters.

The appeal runs until December 18.

Last year about 700 toys and gifts were given out to local children.

This year the charity is hoping for an even better response from the town.

Major Ernie Huby from Huddersfield Salvation Army said: “We hope that when people are shopping they buy an extra toy or gift and donate it.

“We struggled a bit last year with the recession and we want to get the message out there that we need more help than ever before.”

Gifts must be new and unwrapped and can include toys, CDs, books, games, colouring sets, clothing and toiletries.

Major Huby said: “We get a lot of gifts for younger children, especially cuddly toys.

“These will still go to a good home but please don’t forget the teenagers, particularly the boys, who sometimes get a bit left out.

“We could also do with gifts for babies such as toys or clothing.”

Gifts can be dropped off at Superdrug on Princess Alexandra Walk or at the town’s new Salvation Army headquarters on New Hey Road, Oakes.

After they are wrapped they will then be given out to children and families referred through the Salvation Army’s own networks, health visitors and social services.
