PEOPLE in Kirklees have been urged to shop the yobs.

Police, Kirklees Council and landlords teamed up in Ravensthorpe to launch Together, a Kirklees-wide campaign to tackle anti-social behaviour.

The hotline scheme encourages people to contact the Together team and name people causing a nuisance.

It is hoped the project will strengthen links between agencies, so problems can be solved quicker.

Insp Dave Barnett, of the Police Community Safety Unit, believes the new "one-stop shop" is an important weapon against bad behaviour.

He said: "We have worked hard as a force to get levels of burglary and car crime down, so now have the resources to tackle this problem.

"Anti-social behaviour is a concern to everybody. Giving people the opportunity to do something for their community is important.

"Anti-social behaviour ranges from gangs of teenagers hanging around to fly-tipping or dog fouling.

"Hopefully, this new hotline will easily direct people to the agency who can deal with their complaint.

"We are also dedicated to prevention, as well as cure.

"If there is a gang hanging around outside people's homes we need to ask them why they are doing it and if they realise the distress it causes."

The line will be manned during normal office hours, with an answering machine at other times.

The scheme incorporates the Respect national task force.

Home Office Minister Hazel Blears said: "What we're saying is simple; it's your call. Pick up the phone. Together we can tackle anti-social behaviour.

"We have made good progress in tackling the unacceptable behaviour of the minority of people and reclaiming our communities for the law-abiding majority.

"We have brought in a whole range of tools aimed at improving and modifying anti-social behaviour.

"But there is still more to do. We need the people of Kirklees to play their part and take some responsibility for where they live.

"Engaging local people is vital to create strong communities and tackle unacceptable behaviour, which can destroy people's quality of life and ruin neighbourhoods."
