HERITAGE officials fighting to save Huddersfield's library and art gallery were given a tour of the building.

Officials from the 20th Century Society inspected the 1930s structure after making a call in the summer for it to be listed.

Michael Hall, one of the council staff who welcomed them, said: "They saw the standing water on the flat roof.

"I think it's fair to say they appreciate the difficulties we have with the condition of the building."

They were shown around the library and art gallery just hours before a council debate on the building.

The Huddersfield area committee had their say on proposals which could end in the library being demolished.

Mr Hall said: "Whether it becomes listed or not is beyond the control of the council.

"But listing in itself would not stop consideration of demolition proposals."

The meeting agreed to Labour calls that the council's Cabinet should consider adding a heritage specialist to its consultation team.

Councillors heard a repeat of assurances that the library's fate is not sealed.
