A heroin addict stole food from two shops because he only had £6 left to last him a week.

Kenton Edwards was seen acting suspiciously inside the Poundland store in Huddersfield town centre on April 28.

He was stopped at the Victoria Lane store and admitted taking the chocolate.

The 38-year-old also had on him bags of food stolen from Iceland.

He tested positive for the use of cocaine and opiates following his arrest.

His solicitor explained that he’d been a heroin addict for eight years.

He added that Edwards, of Brackenhall Road in Sheepridge, had reduced his use of drugs down to twice a week. However he only had £6 left for the week until he received his benefits and would have eaten the stolen food.

Magistrates gave him a conditional discharge for 12 months.
