MAJOR changes to schools in Huddersfield moved a step closer last night.

Kirklees Council wants to close Fartown High School in August 2011. A new school would run at the same site until 2013 before moving to new premises next to All Saints Catholic College in Bradley.

The new school would have 1,200 places for children aged 11 to 16 from Birkby, Bradley, Deighton, Fartown, Fixby, Hillhouse and Sheepridge.

Parents, pupils, teachers and governors were consulted between April 19 and May 28 about the £24m plan.

The Cabinet yesterday accepted the consultation report and agreed to issue a competition notice for the new school.
