YOUNG engineers from Rastrick High School have put their design skills to good use.

The sixth form students have scooped a top engineering award at the Yorkshire and Humberside regional final of the F1 in Schools Challenge, sponsored by BAE Systems.

Cherie Townend, Holly Crawford, Samantha Price, Robert Hayman, Richard Alpin and Ian Langley who form Team Infurno power first in the 16+ age group.

They won a BAE-Systems sponsored prize and guaranteed themselves a place in the national finals at Olympia, London, on January 12, 2005.

They used a computer-aided design system to design a scaled-down formula one racing car which was raced down a 25 metre track using a carbon dioxide canister to propel it.

They also had to produce a portfolio on the design process and give a presentation to a panel of judges.

The competition was held at the National Railway Museum in York.

Heather Hawthorne, national project director for F1 in Schools, said "The standard and quality of the Yorkshire and Humberside schools' designs have been very high, but the team from Rastrick High School has been particularly impressive."

Richard Hamer, head of education for BAE Systems said: "A key objective for BAE Systems is to encourage engineering among young people.

"The enthusiasm generated at this regional final is a measure of the success of the F1 Challenge in achieving this objective.

"All the teams have worked extremely hard and deserve many congratulations."

Mike Beasley , patron of F1 in Schools, said: "The challenge is a fantastic opportunity for young people to experience the excitement of the engineering industry. It really helps students to make an informed choice about their future."
