COMMUNITY members got the chance to see a little bit of their school’s history at an open day.

Parents, children and friends of Hillside Primary School looked at items which were found in a time capsule unearthed in the former Stile Common Infants and Nursery School in Plane Street. Contractors demolished the building in March and discovered the time capsule which had laid undiscovered for 138 years.

The capsule, dating back to 1873, contains a hymn book, a local newspaper, a book of school rules and conditions plus a poster giving details of the laying of the foundation stone – all in remarkable condition.

The open day was the first of two planned by the school, the second will be on Thursday, July 7 from 1.30 to 4pm.

Hillside, which opened in 2009, replaced Stile Common Infant and Nursery School and Stile Common Junior School at Headfield Road.

The artefacts will then be preserved in the local history library.
