Senior councillors will consider a compulsory purchase of church land for a major crossroad improvement.

A £3m project for Hipperholme crossroads has faced a number of setbacks since it was unveiled last year.

On Monday Calderdale Cabinet will have to consider using compulsory purchase order powers to acquire land “integral” to the scheme.

But the plans have large opposition from the public. A survey by the Hipperholme Preservation Society revealed that 2,024 out of 2,029 people were against the idea.

Calderdale admits: “Without the necessary decision in place the scheme cannot be implemented as the design requires this third party land.”

Cabinet will be asked to approve a CPO for land at Christ Church Hipperholme; the Whitehall Pub Hipperholme and land to the rear of the Tesco Express on Wakefield Road, Hipperholme and accept a Capital Grant of £2.362m from the Department for Transport’s Local Pinch Point Fund towards the project.

The project will see work to try to ease traffic jams at the crossroads which sees traffic from Brighouse, Halifax, Cleckheaton and Bradford merge.

The proposal would involve the council obtaining slices of land from the former Whitehall pub on the corner of Denholme Gate Road and Leeds Road along with land from Christ Church on the corner of Wakefield Road and Brighouse Road and the car park in between Leeds Road and Wakefield Road, with road widening plans part of the scheme.

Councillors will rule on the CPO on Monday at 6pm at Halifax Town Hall.
