SCHOOL may be out for the summer, but hundreds of young people in Kirklees aren’t ready to put down their books just yet.

Instead they have descended on Huddersfield University for two weeks of educational fun, taking part in the University of the First Age Summer Challenge

The event is open to all students in Key Stages 3 and 4.

It is organised by staff from Kirklees Council’s Learning Service, has been running for nine years.

The theme of the first week will be Who Wants to be a Billionaire?

It will see students developing entrepreneurial skills.

They will take part in outdoor team challenges, use ICT to build up businesses, learn about financial planning and budgeting and develop presentation skills.

The theme of the second week is Mission Impossible? with all students facing communication challenges through spy missions, art projects, and music and drama workshops.

Young people will be kept busy all day long, with activities including salsa, Bollywood dance, willow weaving, space hopper racing, tai chi, fashion design, games and competitions.

The Summer Challenge is free and is paid for by Kirklees Council.

Helen Butler, the UFA manager for Kirklees, said: “Summer Challenge is a wonderful way for students to learn and succeed through new activities.

“They meet new friends from across all areas of Kirklees and forge lasting friendships with others from different age groups, cultures and with differing abilities.’’
