A Holme Valley Mountain Rescue volunteer is hoping that this Sunday will be less dramatic than the last one.

But even so, Simona Williams will be up to her neck in mud.

This weekend Simona, of Seymour Walk, Meltham, will be taking part in the Yorkshire Spartan Sprint with 13 colleagues from the Wakefield Holiday Inn.

She will be raising money for the mountain rescue team, as well as a number of other charities, by completing the gruelling 5km obstacle race at Grewelthhorpe, near Ripon.

Simona, 39, a reservations manager, has been training hard for the challenging event.

Competitors have to contend with obstacles such as a mud bath and climbing a rope net.

Simona said: “You can only do so much training for this event, because you don’t know exactly what to expect.

“Mud doesn’t bother me and we have made a pact not to leave anybody behind!”

Last Sunday was also full of drama for Simona when she was a member of the Holme Valley Mountain Rescue team called out to help a young man in distress near Wessenden Head.

The man had begun to experience chest pains and got into difficulties in the high winds.

Simona, who was in the RAF Reserves for over six years, helped the man until he was airlifted off the moors by the Yorkshire Air Ambulance.
