A GROUP of Holme Valley women are celebrating after raising almost £4,000 to beat breast cancer.

The 12-strong team – dubbed The Wrinkled Stockings – put on their grass skirts and walking shoes to take part in the Edinburgh Moonwalk last month.

The women were among 12,000 who took part in the 26-mile trek, starting at midnight.

It took them around nine hours to complete the night-time challenge, sporting decorated bras and costumes based on this year’s Mardi Gras theme, including grass skirts, flowers and fairy lights.

The annual event raises money for breast cancer charity Walk the Walk.

Emma Darwin, 24, of Holmfirth organised the team, made up of walkers aged between 22 and 50.

She said: “It was tough and we needed a lot of sugar.

“We had to get there at 9pm for the warm up and by the time we started, our bodies wanted to go to sleep. We’ve raised far more than we expected. We’re really pleased.”
