A HOLMFIRTH cafe is celebrating being the first in the town to be awarded top marks for its hygiene.

The Riverside Cafe on Hollowgate was awarded the maximum five stars after impressing Kirklees Council officials carrying out a Scores On The Doors food hygiene inspection.

The inspections by environmental health officials are unannounced.

The cafe received “very good” ratings in hygiene and structural compliance criteria and a “good” in the confidence in management category.

The cafe reopened in February after being redeveloped.

Manager Sarah Hirst said: “We are very proud that our high standards of food hygiene have been recognised.

“It is a great award for all our team’s hard work.’

Staff are also able to offer high-quality drinks, having been trained by Huddersfield company Coopers Coffee.

The Scores On The Doors scheme is a national public information service in which people can find the official council hygiene rating for pubs, restaurants, takeaways and other food businesses.

It means potential customers can check out the hygiene standards of 80,977 food outlets across the UK.
