Firefighters have for the last four days been tackling a huge fire involving a large pile of wood chippings near Whams Road at the old Hepworth iron works site in the Crow Edge area of Barnsley.

Fire crews were first called to the incident at 4.45am on Saturday morning.  Four fire crews from Stocksbridge, Penistone, Barnsley and Cudworth stations initially attended.

Crews from Holmfirth and the Nottinghamshire Fire Service also attended.

Firefighters have been using hose reel jets to extinguish the fire and have made fire breaks within the chippings to prevent the fire spreading.

The fire is under control with crews remaining at the scene until tomorrow damping down.

Holmfirth crew commander Frank van Rooyen said: "We were called out on Sunday. Because it's wood chips it's been difficult to extinguish. We have not been back since."

A R Plevin & Sons spokeswoman said, “We can confirm that a small amount of smouldering was discovered in a processed wood pile during routine checks on Wednesday at our Hazlehead, Sheffield site.

"The pile was isolated and the dampening down process carried out in-house under the guidance of South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue and the Environment Agency.

"Due to a change in weather conditions on Sunday morning and associated risk of a fire, the decision was made for South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue to fully extinguish the isolated wood pile.

"The dampening down process is continuing and we expect the situation to be resolved within the next couple of days.

"We would like to reassure residents that there is no cause for concern and apologise for any inconvenience caused.

"We would also like to thank South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue and Environment Agency for their support."
