PLANS for a new supermarket in Holmfirth have been given the go-ahead.
German Supermarket chain Lidl was yesterday granted planning permission to build a 1,518-square metre store at Riverholme Works on Huddersfield Road.
The chain held two public meetings and 15,000 questionnaires were handed out before it was inundated with responses welcoming the proposal to bring more choice and value for money to the town.
The creation of the stone built single storey shop will allow the current occupier Sicame Electrical Developments to relocate to a site in Leeds Road, retaining 40 jobs within Kirklees.
A puffin crossing will also be created on Huddersfield Road.
Concerns raised regarding the loss of employment land were not supported by English Heritage which said the buildings architecture has suffered severe alteration and subsequently was of no loss.
A number of councilors sitting on Kirklees Council Planning Sub Committee took the view that they were willing to forgo employment land to allow redevelopment of the site and allow greater choice for shoppers within Holmfirth.
The council’s approval is now delegated to officers to resolve any outstanding highways matters and impose any necessary conditions.
