A HOLMFIRTH man convicted of dumping deadly waste has been ordered to pay back more than £36,000.

Edward Mosley was paid the money after clearing waste from a site in Sheffield.

But he was later convicted of illegally dumping almost 1,400 tonnes of waste, some of which contained carcinogens, in Sheffield.

Mosley, a director of Hepworth-based Earthshift Ltd, was taken to court yesterday by North East Regional Asset Recovery Team (RART), which targets the proceeds of crime.

Sheffield Crown Court was told the 54-year-old benefited by at least £36,475 for his part in the land clearance deal.

That money was confiscated along with £2,500 in court costs.

He now has six months to settle the order with the threat of 15 months in prison if he defaults.

His company, now said to be in liquidation, was prosecuted by the Environment Agency along with Sheffield-based company Campbell Homes for the illegal dumping.

The waste material was dumped on land off Penistone Road, just 500m from a local nature reserve.

Mosley pleaded guilty to three offences of dumping potentially hazardous waste, and was sentenced to a community service order totalling 150 hours of unpaid work.

The housing firm was fined a total of £3,000. A survey revealed the waste material contained potentially hazardous poly-aromatic hydrocarbons in the soil. After the case, Det Chief Insp Lisa Atkinson, head of the North East RART, said: “It sends a clear message that, no matter what the criminal activity, we will strip criminals of their assets and bring them to justice.”
